Congressionally authorized and introduced in 1986, American Eagle Gold bullion coins have become a favorite way for investors to add gold to their portfolios.

The obverse of this radiant coin features a depiction of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ breath-taking Walking Liberty, first introduced on the $20 gold piece in 1907. To Liberty’s left, you will find the date, with 50 stars representing the 50 states encircling her body. From 1986 to 1991, the date of issue was in Roman numerals. Since then, the coin has used Arabic numerals for the date.

The design on the reverse is by Miley Busiek and depicts an eagle in flight, delivering an olive branch to a nest that holds its young. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches across the top, while “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (left) and “IN GOD WE TRUST” (right) balance the design. Beneath the nest, you will find the weight and denomination.

Made from gold mined exclusively in the United States, the coin uses 24-karat gold with a modicum of alloy that helps protect the coin. The result, for the $50 Eagle, is a one-ounce 22-karat gold coin with one full Troy ounce of pure gold. Coins are also available with face values of $25, $10 and $5, containing ½, ¼ and 1/10 ounces of pure gold, respectively.

A safeguard for wealth protection is that the United States government guarantees the coin’s gold content, weight and purity. This gives the coin the flexibility to be bought and sold in most parts of the world. Precious Metals IRA Eligible.
